Welcome to Braised in a Kitchen – I am so glad you are here! Let me tell you a little bit about myself. My name is Kathryn, I am a mom-taught/self-taught cook and this is where I share my recipes with you – my new invisible internet bestie! I am also a wife, mama, and cat referee (we have two cats who fight all. the. time.). Here, you will find a little bit of everything. One day I might share a recipe for power greens pesto and the next day a recipe for peanut butter fudge brownies. But it all evens out…right? We try to eat mostly clean, whole foods and to eat seasonally, but sometimes you just need a decadent slice of strawberry caramel cake to round out your diet!
About The Food
My life as an amateur chef started when I was young – with my mom encouraging us to help her in the kitchen. But it wasn’t until I got older that I developed a love for cooking. The first dish I ever made completely on my own was pancakes and they were…a disaster! I turned the heat up too high so they were slightly burned on the outside and very raw on the inside. I can still remember my dad insisting that he preferred them that way (ha!).
Fast forward to today, and don’t worry, I am a much better cook. I enjoy making up my own recipes and trying new twists on classic dishes! I read cookbooks like novels and am always hunting for new dishes to inspire, nourish, and delight my family. I think my hubby’s main complaint is that we rarely have the same meal twice in our home!
I love cooking, its one of my favorite ways to pass the time. But more than that, I just really love food. From kale to cake and bacon to Brussels sprouts, I love it all – and my hubby is right there with me. When we first met there were some things he thought he didn’t like (roasted beets, for example), but I quickly converted him. In fact, we joke that he mainly proposed to me because of my cooking…although I’m starting to wonder if it’s really a joke or just him being honest…
Since I’m a born and raised Texan and a Southerner through and through you will find a lot of Tex-Mex recipes here. Like seriously. A lot. You will also find quite a few Southern dishes, international cuisine, and everything in between. Also, because of #MomLife I try to create as many 30 minute and make ahead recipes as I can! And anytime a recipe can be modified to make it gluten free, vegetarian, or vegan I will include that in the instructions.
About our Family
A little bit about our family: the three of us (soon to be four!) live in the best state ever, Texas! When I’m not in the kitchen creating
messes masterpieces or chasing after my adorable ball of energy (my almost 2 year old son!), I enjoy gardening, crafting, and camping. I love all foods Tex-Mex, I could seriously eat it three times a day. The newest member of our family, a little girl, is due in July of 2020 and we can’t wait to meet her!
My hubby loves woodworking, fishing, and being outdoors and he is the most wonderful, amazing, and kind person you will ever meet. He is my sous-chef (which is French for dishwasher) and biggest supporter. The best part of every day is being married to him. And chocolate.
And then we have our sweet, energetic, fun-loving little boy. He is such a delight and our main source of entertainment! On photo shoot days he can usually be found right by my set-up table saying yummy. He is not at all a picky eater and we are really hopping that trend continues. And he is about to be promoted to big brother, something I know he will be great at!
About the Blog
All of the photos on this blog are taken by me (as an amateur food photographer!) unless otherwise noted. All recipes, creations, and writings on this blog are my own unless otherwise noted. Most of the recipes have been tested at least twice before being posted.
Four days a week I will post a new recipe (M, T, Th, & F). On Wednesdays I break up the week with a non-recipe post that can be anything from toddler items I can’t live without, to how to cope with a baby who won’t sleep (been there, done that. night. after. night.), to general life musings by me – which I’m sure will be beyond interesting to everyone (ha!).
